Day 7/90 of my 90 day challenge.

I have been very busy lately, but I have had time to keep track of my meals and my exercises for the entire week!  This is good news! I gained about 1 1/2 pound this week (this is what I wanted), hopefully most of it is muscle and not fat, but I haven’t [...]

What about those drinks you can have while exercising?

Sugar in large quantities before your exercise can have a negative impact on you. I know this first hand. Having a glass of juice, a piece of cake, cookies, or a glass of coke, or any other soda can make you dizzy while you workout. Why does this happen? Continue reading What about those drinks you can have while exercising?

Secret Benefit of Fish Oil

2889789670_112eea6052Did you know that fish oil can help you lose weight?

Six grams of fish oil added to the diet of a person who regularly exercises (walks, jogs, runs, swims, etc…) helped decrease body fat more than exercise alone (according to Australian scientists). Most fish oil supplements contain about Continue reading Secret Benefit of Fish Oil

Workout During your Break?

493377774_2e21828676I found a really interesting article on MSNBC that talks about mini workouts. The idea is great. Basically whenever you have a little down time you exercise.

Pretend you are sitting at your desk, the phone finally stopped ringing and the pile of papers is gone. You think about running to Starbucks, but wait! Continue reading Workout During your Break?

Lower Back Pain

Did you ever suffer from lower back pain?  Many individuals actually live with daily lower back pain. I produced this article with information from the National Institutes of Health. Hopefully it will help you reduce the recurrence of back pain, it will help you to quickly recover from it, and to prevent it in future.

Lower back pain is a manifestation of a nerve or muscle strain. A bone illness like osteoporosis is another cause of lower back pain. Continue reading Lower Back Pain

Exercising at Home

The number of exercises we can do at home are many. Most of them require us to use our body weight as resistance (and these are great because no equipment is required). I believe that if you are going to be doing most of your workouts at home you need at the very least a set of dumbbells, a swiss ball, and a medicine ball.

A yoga mat would also be helpful. It not only serves as a cushion, but it will also prevent your sweat from making contact with the floor (especially useful if the room where you perform your workouts is carpeted).

Today: Planks. Continue reading Exercising at Home

A Great Body in 90 Days?

foodscWe’ve all heard about fitness programs that promise a great body in 90 days or 12 weeks, or three months (which is all about the same time frame).

Why 90 days? I’ve read several books about the subject. They all point the importance of setting goals, designing a plan, and sticking to it. The plan should be carefully divided into the workout section, and the diet section of the program.

A few weeks ago Continue reading A Great Body in 90 Days?

Vitamin B-6 is a Drug!

Jimee, Jackie, Tom & Asha. Creative Commons

Yes, you read that right, vitamin B-6 is officially a drug. The FDA banned today pyridoxamin, which is a naturally occuring form of vitamin B-6. It is not clear yet what will happen with all the multivitamins that contain B-6, since there are two other [...]

My Goals

I have always struggled with my weight. Unlike many, my challenge was always gaining weight rather than losing it. I have been working out for a while now and you can see my pictures below. I know I look skinny, but believe or not, I have made some progress. Continue reading My Goals

Lower Body Exercises

Last week we focused on abs, triceps and chest exercises. Today we’ll focus on our lower body. After all, it is not very attractive having a huge upper body with skinny legs.

Squats are simple exercises that can be performed anywhere. Stand feet shoulder-width apart. Lower your body bending your knees (your back should be arched a little). Ideally you should go down as much as you can while keeping this safe posture. Slowly lift your body back to the starting position and repeat.

Update on Peanuts

Since we talked about peanuts as being a healthy food a couple of days ago, I though that it would be useful to know which peanut products you should avoid. The FDA has developed the widget to the right side of this post which shows all recalled peanut products both for human and [...]

Are Multivitamins any Good?

According to an article published by the New York Times on February 9, 2009 Multivitamins may not live up to consumers’ expectations. The study focused on women taking Multivitamins after menopause hoping that it would reduce their chance of heart disease and cancer.

Researchers found that the supplements had no effect on the [...]
