Attention Magazine Subscribers!

I am one of those people who are subscribed to many magazines, and this is the time when my subscriptions expire. I normally toss the renewal letters if I am not interested in renewing my subscriptions. In other words, I simply let my subscriptions expire if I am not interested.

Men´s Health was one of the magazines I decided not to renew. While sorting through my mail this afternoon their subscription letter stated that unless you send back the bill with the word ¨cancel¨written on it, my subscription would be automatically renewed. I am glad I read my mail!

This is a first for me. I was very surprised. No other magazine has ever asked me to act in order to let my subscription expire. I am not complaining, but I just want everyone to be careful when those annoying renewal reminders arrive. They may be more than a ¨reminder¨!

  • That happened to me with Good Housekeeping. I didn’t notice the first time though & figured it out when I went to collection. I paid it since I do like the mag, just didnt’ want it anymore. The next time, I put cancel on my bill & still ended up going into collection. I can’t even remember how I finally got out of my subscription. I think I canceled online finally.

    Wow!
I did not know that they would send you to collection!
I am glad you were able to cancel eventually!

  • I think that’s more of a sign of the industry then anything else. Magazines are in terrible shape, losing more and more market share everyday to online forums such as your blog.

The “cancel” notice was just a clever way to attempt to hold on to a dying subscription base.

Glad you read your mail and thanks for alerting the rest of us to some sneaky tactics!
