Is The Recession Causing an Overweight Population?

Has the economic recession caused you to gain weight? A recent article in the Los Angeles Times suggested that the economic slowdown may be to blame for your weight problems! (You can read the article here).

Spending on food is down by $56 billion compared to last January.

You would think that people would have lost weight by spending less on food, you would think that people are eating less, right? Not necessarily, usually food that is really not that good for you is cheaper than “the better for you” kind of food.
What does this all translate to? The article points out that about 33% of Americans are overweight.
Something the article did not mention, however, is another possible cause, I think, as to why some people may be putting on more weight during the current slowdown. Those of my friends who have lost their jobs, are really moving less than before, I mean they do not need to rush to work, and spend most hours sitting in front of the computer or TV.
Perhaps the issue is much more complex than that. What do I mean by that? I have seen an increase in the number of gym goers. The gym is busy pretty much all hours of the day, and pretty much every trainer is busy with new clients. I guess that that is the flip side of this bad economic situation.
Have you considered a career in the personal training business? Sounds fun.
